Why is high resolution paid?

Short answer: up to 720p the file goes from YouTube straight to your browser and never touches us. Above that it has to pass through our server, and that is where the cost is.

1

YouTube keeps video and audio apart

Above 720p there is no ready-made file. The picture lives in one stream and the sound in another. Formats up to 720p are the exception: they already carry both, which is why your browser can fetch them on its own.

2

Someone has to join them

For you to get an MP4 that plays with sound, we download both streams to our server and merge them into a single file. The merge copies the original data without re-encoding, so the result is exactly the quality YouTube handed over.

3

The file travels twice

Down from YouTube to us, then up from us to you. A ten-minute 4K video easily passes 2 GB, which becomes more than 4 GB of traffic, plus processing and disk space while the merge runs.

4

Keeping access alive

YouTube distrusts datacenter servers and demands an authenticated session for many videos. We keep that session alive with automatic renewal several times a day. Without it, a lot of links would simply stop working.

We could re-encode the video into something smaller and cheap to serve. We do not: re-encoding degrades the picture, and you would get something worse than what YouTube has. We would rather hand over the original untouched and charge for it. The file is deleted from our server as soon as it finishes reaching you.

Frequently asked questions

Is SaveTube free?
Yes. You can download up to 3 videos per day up to 720p or as MP3 for free. For higher resolutions, use credits.
How do I buy credits?
Click "Buy credits", choose the amount and pay by card (or Pix, in Brazil). The credit lands in your account automatically once the payment clears, usually in under a minute.
Why do I pay above 720p?
Because above 720p YouTube stores the picture and the sound in separate files. For you to get an MP4 that plays with sound, we download both to our server and merge them without re-encoding, so no quality is lost. The file travels twice: from YouTube to us, then from us to you. Up to 720p none of that happens, because the file already comes complete and your browser fetches it directly.
Can I download YouTube audio?
Yes. Just check "Download audio only (MP3)" before starting the download.
Why do some videos not work?
Private, removed, age-restricted (+18) or region-blocked videos cannot be processed.
Do credits expire?
No. They live in your account, tied to your email, not to the browser. Sign in from another device and the balance is still there.
